A sluggish machine with cold oil at startup is normal. It should warm quickly and smooth out quickly too.
Donnie :
If the machine has old hoses onit, they can allow air to enter the lines and this would create excessive foam in the oil. You may notice it on the dipstick.

Replace any lines that are hard or cracked. Reseal all the suction side lines and the strainer housing. Inspect the strainer for debris.
Donnie :
If it stays foamy, it will cause over heating since the oil is not as effective for cooling. Running in to high a gear is usually the problem with overheating. If it will cool quickly when in neutral and the engine speed is high, the cooler is working.
Donnie :
It does normally run 30W oil but, the transmission grade TDTO or TO-4 is better than engine oil. Change the oil and filter and inspect the strainer will it is out. Test any metal found to see if it is iron or not. Shiney fragments that are not magnetic could be from the torque convertor and if it is leaking internally, could be the source of the overheat and sluggish operation.

The cooler in the radiator is for the hydraulic system. Transmission coolers are water cooled. It is more common to have an engine overheating from a plugged cooler than the transmission. The easiest way to know is the cool down test. Place the transmission in neutral and see if it will cool off quickly.

I will need you serial number to find the correct chart for the transmission test. This testing is only for pressures and only two are adjustable. It mainly show a failure of the seals in the transmission.
Customer :
The serial number is XXXXX Just a note, when the oil warms up it pulls fine and I really don't see any loss of power when the temperature gets high, just concerned I may damage the transmission. I will change the filter and oil this weekend but still want to perform the pressure test to make sure I don't have other problems.
