What causes water in both the motor oil and in the transmission?

Dear Curtis,

Here is some more information: Hyster Serial # XXXXX ANSI -B56 1-1969-75

and S25SL. We have had 20# XXXXX pressure on the radiator for 24 hours and their is no air escaping from the radiator or through the cooler. It is OK. We didn't see a plate on the engine, but the distributor rotor says "Japan" and to me the engine looks like a Mazda. There was enough water in the engine to turn the oil milky. This might be helpful, two weeks ago the forklift would not move, in checking the transmission it was 1 1/2 qts low on oil. (there was no water in the transmission oil at that time) The lift ran fine until this week when the overflow started pumping the water-oil mixture out on the ground. Both the engine and transmission showed over full on the dip sticks.

Hi Curtis, We will pressure test the cooler at 100psi this morning. and yes, there was the milky goo on the filler cap. That is the real question we are puzzled with, why is both the engine and transmission showing water in the oil ? How did one get into the other?

No sir, we take pretty good care of our forklifts and they are garaged when not used. We are in Anaheim, CA so the weather is mild most of the time. Our mechanic is at a Dr's appointment so we are on hold for the pressure test. He is also going to steam clean the lower end of the lift so we can check over everything. We thank you for your input and will push the accept answer button and just chalk it up to a mystery why both the trans and engine went bad at the same time.

Hi Curtis,

We steamed cleaned it yesterday and I went to Hyster and bought the new trans filter and engine filter. While I was there I told them what had happened, and that the compression was good, the trans cooler was OK, and they said that the only other way the water could get into the oil is if it overheated (but they didn't give me details) And this could have been the case.

We will get it all back together and run it for a couple of days and let you know.

We checked the transmission yesterday and it was about 1/2 quart low, and it was in the radiator water, so we are going to put a separate cooler on it. Funny it didn't show even with 100 psi air pressure on the cooler... So I appreciate all your help and will accept your answer and reply.
