Customer: I own a 444E John Deere Loader, and I am having trouble with the hydrostatic transmission???? It seems to be running very slow in road and work gear...it seems to have lots of power as it will spin the tires while pushing soils. Just wondering if there is any settings on the transmission?

Hi Joyce, does the machine seem to change speed at all no matter weather you select road or work? Thanks, Dave
Customer
It seems to go into gear but doesn't seem to be as fast as it should be
do you have a select option for steep grade/med grade or flat ground work
Customer
no, it has just high and low......rabbit or turtle????
LOL , OK let me do some more research and I'll get back to you ASAP. Thanks, Dave
How about the trans filters , ever been changed?
Customer
Have changed the sock type one, but the steel one i have just cleaned out...it is 800 bucks for a new one
Dang,@ 800.00 I'd clean it too! There should be a cartridge type also.give me a few min and i'll go back to my JD parts website and get some part # XXXXX you.
Can you get me a serial # XXXXX?

JD part # XXXXX is a cartridge filter for the trans. I have gone over the entire system and the are no adjustments for travel speed. That pretty well leaves filters and fluid.I would drain the trans and change out this 1 other filter and see weather it helps, it may be that with the age and wear on the machine, road speed will not get better no matter what you do short of a trans rebuild.
Hi

If you can spin the tires and have power in low there is nothing wrong with the guts of the hydrostatic system. And the way I am hearing you it is slow in both hi range and low range.? If when you shift to hi range the trouble starts then the problem is in the 2 speed transmission and the hi clutch is bad. From what I understand it is slow in both hi and lo.

The hydrostatic system is complicated in this application. When you push the foot throttle to wide open and are on level ground the system senses that there is little to no load and the control pressure regulating valve sends full oil to the hydrostatic pump swash plate control cylinders. The swash plate is then angled the most it can go, so it sends lots of oil the the hydrostatic motor which turns fast, so you go fast. Then when you ram into a pile of dirt the control system senses this load and pulls the swash plate back. This lets you keep your foot throttle tight to the board and gives you power to do something. On your machine this control system is messed up, it does not sense that there is no load so it does not angle the swash plate to wide open. Like I said in the beginning if there was damage to the hydrostats they would not be able to spin the tires. I would start with the control pressure regulating valve then the control pressure bypass valve then the pressure overriding valve. there must be something messed up in one of these.

In a bobcat they do not have this complicated system because the person running the levers is the sensing system. If you try to run wide open into a pile and do not pull the levers back you will kill the engine instantly.

Thanks John
