John Deere 410 backhoe loader will not move forward or backwards. What can cause this?

i have a john deere...

i have a john deere 410 backhoe loader, an older model, i was moving dirt with loader and when i dumped dirt i backed up and went to go forward and it would not go, it will not move forward or back wards now. i can put tires in the air and they will spin in reverse but not forward, but they will not move the machine when its on the ground at all. all hydralics work on loader and backhoe but they bleed off. what can possibly cos this with out any warning?

Have you checked the oil level in the reverser?

the only thing i have checked is the hydalic fluid. where wood i check the oil in the reversr at?

i took two caps off top of reverse and no fluid was visible. i poured flood in it but could not get it to fill up? i then started tractor with caps off and could see fluid circulating in it while in reverse and when i put it in forward it would shoot out?

The reverser uses the same oil as the hydraulics and is checked with the dipstick under the seat. That is where you fill it also. Check it with machine off.

With the machine idling, push the clutch pedal way down,(The 1st part of the travel dumps oil and the bottom of the travel pushes the throwout bearing against the fingers of the clutch plate,) and see if there is any noise. If it is noisy the center of the clutch disk may have striped out, and it may drag enough to move tires in the air but will not carry any load. You might hear some noise without pushing the clutch down, and the pieces may have already flew apart and not be very noisy.
You will have to split it to repair this.

oh ok yeah i check that. when it happened i check the oil level and it was low, not even on the stick but i add oil to it and it didnt help. i just filled it two days before that cos i blew a hose on the loader. i replaced hose and filled it up then. but i did not understand why it was low again when i just had filled it and there was no leaks at the time it stop moving. i dont hear any noise from it and it did not make any odd noises when it happen. i have notice that when pushing down on the clutch that it does not seem as stiff as it was but the second part is engaging the clutch and still tight. is it possible that the reverser has went out? i did notice that inside the reverser (where the big piston is) that it look like a crack in the plate covering that area but was not sure about it. thought it might be a mold mark from where it was made. if that is a crack could it possibly cos this? i have noticed that the pump up front of the motor sounds different, like it has air in it, hard to describe, its like a light tising sound when its pumping.

Yes it is possible the reverser went, but usually you do not loose both forward and reverse.

Even though the pedal feels tight the disk can still be striped out on the splines.

Maybe you should take the starter out and see if there is oil in that area. It is supposed to be dry. But maybe the seal in the transmission housing went out and is letting the oil go into the dry housing.I think that housing is supposed to have a cotter key in a little hole in the bottom,have seen them plugged, ( the key is supposed to keep the hole open). If it is there is should be in the center on the very bottom. Taking the starter out would let you see a little bit.

The front pump cannot suck a drop of oil, it has to get charged by the transmission pump,I would assume that your hydraulics are slow. The transmission pump is about right under the shift levers. So when you are saying the pump sounds funny I think that the transmission pump is not getting the oil up there. And because the trans pump is not working right you have no reverser.

There is a 1 inch suction tube where the transmission pump sucks oil from the bottom of the housing. I have seen these pipes get holes in them and then they suck air. There is a screen that this pipe sucks oil through. you have to drain all the oil and pull the screen out the side , under a big plug.

On this valve that you had off on the right side there is a 1/8 pipe plug on the back and the bottom of that valve .You check system pressure there, somewhere around 175 psi

my hydraulics work just as they have always, they respond fast and move normally, i can still dig with the machine and move it around with the backhoe. thats how i got it back to the house. i have noticed that they do bleed off now though. the boom on the back will drop over night and it didn't use to do that. i know the cotter key your talking about it is in there loosely and there is no oil coming from it, it is dry. i have nothing to check the pressure with.

If your hydraulics work normally then the trans pump is working.The reverser does not have anything to do with the bleeding off.

Something must have happened to the reverser, without a gauge it is just a guess. You can pick up a car transmission gauge kit for less than 75.00.

one last thing could it possibly be reverser clutch pack? i took transmission top cover off and there was nothing visibly wrong inside there. took starter off and everything looks good in there. i check fluid this morning after it sat all night and its over filled. ill buy and try the guage kit and see what it reads.

i want to think you guys for your help, you been great help with fixin my backhoe. i got it fixed and all it was is just the clutch linkage that operates the reverser. it was not allowing it to engage. i figured that one out by grabing hold of clutch linkage to pull my self out from under the machine. it kicked in gear at that moment. lol thanks alot guys for all your help. i not sure we would of ever figured this out.

Sorry that I forgot about that. I have had that roll pin that holds the two shafts together shear partially. It looks like it is moving right but is not quite moving all that it should.
