My 7 year old son has had a low grade fever 100-102 for 3 days with bad cough, his throat hurts but not his chest - does he need antibiotic? The kids Motrin has been keeping fever down but if I miss a dose it goes back up

I understand your concern.

Well as you describe, in most of the upper respiratory tract infection are caused by viruses.

And antibiotics don't help.

He should take some self-care measures until you see your doctor.
Do steam inhalation and saline gargles.
He should take the nasal saline spray and OTC Nasonex spray.
He should take Ibuprofen alternately with Tylenol every 4-6 hourly and Nyquil/Claritin.
He should hydrate yourself with warm liquids.
He should start a multivitamin supplement and vitamin C lozenges.
Take OTC Robitussin DM for a cough.
Elevate his head while lying down.
If his symptoms will persist then see your doctor for further evaluation and management.

In case of persistent high fever, sore throat then strep throat should be ruled out and then antibiotics can be prescribed.
