There is risk of thumb bone fracture from the impact.
Given that the swelling is worsening, you should consider thumb xrays if possible.
Meanwhile, the treatment is the same even if there is fracture.
You will need to apply ice 5 minutes at a time with 10 minute break. Keep your thumb elevated as much as possible.
Use a thumb strap or immobilizer to avoid any movement for now.
NSAIDs like Naproxen ( aleve) can be taken 2 tabs twice daily to control the pain.
