I have had diarrhea since Wednesday afternoon. How do I know

Customer Question

I have had diarrhea since Wednesday afternoon. How do I know if this is viral or something more? I am pushing Gatorade and sprite water to stay hydrated. Nothing I have tried to eat seems to stay in, egg, toast banana crackers
JA: Have you seen a doctor about this yet? What medications are you taking?
Customer: No doctor yet. Ameprazole and ad air inhaler. I also have some zofran from a few months ago from an intestinal infection that I took
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

A bacterial intestinal infection has more severe symptom; pain, number of bowel motions are more. The bowel motions are explosive too in a bacterial infection. The symptoms too last longer.

The initial management is as following (most of which you are doing);

1) PeptoBismol

2) Lomotil; may only be taen if the diarrhea is vigorous.

3) Gatorade / Pedialyte

4) Plenty of fluids

5) BRAT diet; banana, rice, applesauce, toast. Vegetable broths / vegetable soups, coconut water also can help.

6) Probiotics

The primary aim is prevention of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. If the diarrhea loss of fluids is too much or you are unable to drink enough liquids; you may need antibiotics and / or intravenous fluids. In that case you may need to got to ER.

Please feel free for your follow up questions.

I would be happy to assist you further, if you need any more information.
