Customer Question

Hi Pearl. I went on vacation and came back with a severe sunburn. In particular, the chest and lower leg areas are the worst and both are now weeping. Can I treat this with over the counter creams or should I go to the doctor?
JA: What seems to make the symptoms worse or better? Have you noticed any swelling?
Customer: Some swelling in my legs but, a combination of Tylenol and ibuprofen worked. So far nothing has made it better but nothing has made it worse.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: No ma'am.

Hello and thanks for your question.
It's my first priority to help you.

I understand your concern.

As per your description, you should try some self care remedies like

Try diluted vinegar soaks-mix half a cup of white vinegar in one liter of tepid water. Soak clean cotton in it and leave over the affected area for 5 minutes, and then gently wipe clean.

If you don't have vinegar then cool compresses with cold water can be tried.

Use OTC Cortizone-10 ointment and polysporin ointment twice a day.

Avoid any sort of soap while bathing, use a soap-free body wash instead.

OTC Calamine lotion or moisturizer such as Cetaphil can be applied after bath.

Take OTC Claritin 10 mg once or twice a day.

Continue tylenol or Ibuprofen.

Use an SPF 50+ sunscreen while outdoors. Avoid sun as much as possible.

Hydrate yourself with plenty of fluids.

Also wear loose cotton garments.

If your symptoms'll not show improvement then see your doctor for a clinical exam.

Elevate your legs.

Take proper rest.

Monitor your blood pressure also.
