Customer Question

I have had 2 resections of small bowel and colon at the terminal illeum due to Crohn's disease. One in 1990 and 2nd in 1994. I have a surgical clip at site of resection and usually have CAT Scans. Since these clips are older, I have been told that I cannot have an MRI due to magnet. I would like to have Cleveland Clinic send me the clip information, but assume my records have been deleted because of time. Since April of 2014, the surgical clip and adhesions cause me unbearable pain. Is MRI not safe because of my clip being an older clipz?
JA: How long have you had the pain? What seems to make the pain better or worse?
Customer: Running the sweeper, walking, exercise make the pain worse. It feels like a knife being inserted in abdomen. Other times I cannot determine what pain is due to. Wake up with pain and it may last throughout the day. In April of 2014 I had CAT scan because I thought it was kidney stones again because of past history. At that time ER told me it was my clip.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: Kidney stone history, Crohn's disease, anemic on and off

I am Dr. Arun and will be helping you today.

The older surgical clips were not MRI compliant and an MRI can damage the abdominal viscera during MRI.

If the surgical clips are tried to be removed; there can be chance of further adhesions. Any additional surgery predispose for potentially newer adhesions. Secondly, these clips are embedded in the dense adhesions (which is basically scar formation in and around the intestines and peritoneal cavity). And removing this dense scar is not easy, especially with Crohn's disease which too form scar all around and there can be bowel damage.

I understand this is not a good and encouraging news, and I am sorry about it. But I have to be honest with you.

Please feel free for your follow up questions.

I would be happy to assist you further, if you need any more information.
