Customer Question

Today I became unconscious for about 8 hours. I took a shower, then brushed my teeth, as I'm brushing my teeth I began gagging and coughing ( sensitive gag reflex), then dizziness came over me. I began to walk towards sofa and that was the last I remember. I came to on the floor about 8 hours later. I had vomitted and urinated. This is the first time this has happened. I take 2 aleve, 1-3 times per week as needed. I have severe arthritis and depression. I do not take any other meds, nor do I drink or take recreational drugs. I am a 48 yr old female.

Thank you for your question.

This is likely cough syncope.

In some cases due to coughing or sneezing there is less venous blood return to heart & the cardiac output or blood coming from heart is diminished.

There is also an increase in vagus nerve tone.

All these effects causes less blood supply to brain producing syncope.

However, it is unusual to remain in such condition for 8 hours.

I would suggest to take an examination by doctor.

You may need a few tests to rule out any neurological or cardiac problem.

I hope this information helps.
