Customer Question

I just arrived at this web page, and was going to read the information from 8 yrs. ago. Anyway, hello Ms. Wilson. I am experiencing a pronounced odor from my urine, which smells like iodine to me...crazy it seems. Now, I am endeavoring to find out what is causing it. There are no other symptoms, except must empty my bladder several times during the day. Your comments would be appreciated.
JA: Have you seen a doctor about this yet? What medications are you taking?
Customer: No, because he just retired, but intend to make appointment for next week with a new one. My meds include synthroid, 88mg three times a week and 75mg one time then back to 88mg. I also take Fareston and have for years. I also need calcium, 2000 mg recommended. That is a problem as my body has developed a problem caused by parathyroid removal without my knowledge.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: I have a cough, and I have a digestive problem.
JA: How long have you been dealing with the cough? Are you having any other symptoms?
Customer: I cough off and on for some time. Resting seems to help a little.

I am Dr. Arun and will be helping you today.

A urine odor and increased frequency of urination are likely due to urinary tract infection (UTI). In your age group this is likely due to;

1) Prostate enlargement.

2) A stone formation in the bladder or kidney.

Your would require following;

a) Urine exam

b) Urine culture

c) Ultrasound of bladder, prostate and kidneys.

Your would require a course of antibiotics. Meanwhile drink plenty of water, other liquids and cranberry juice.

Please feel free for your follow up questions.

I would be happy to assist you further, if you need any more information.
