My son was diagnosed with diabetes today. His student health

Customer Question

My son was diagnosed with diabetes today. His student health nurse sent him home with lantus and novolog. He took 10 units of lantus at 9:30 pm at 10:30 pm his blood sugar was 238 and at midnight his blood sugar was 278. He felt fine both times he is asleep but I am worried of him drifting off in a coma I don't know if he needs more insulin since his number was rising again?

Thank you for your question.

I am Dr Saha, I shall try my best to help you.

He may need more insulin and diet regulation, exercise.

Online we should not advise about insulin dose without examining him in person as it is a prescription medicine.

If the level exceeds 300 mg/dl you should contact doctor asap.

Usually blood sugar more than 400 mg/dl can lead to drowsiness, ketoacidosis, coma.

It should be treated promptly.

Blood sugar 278 is high, though our body can adapt at higher levels.

You should contact a diabetic specialist or GP to make a management plan.

I hope this information helps.
