I am Dr. Arun and will be helping you today. I am a sports medicine specialist.

I am sorry that your question was unanswered for long.

I am not sure if you trained your over all muscles including the calf muscles before starting running back again. The soreness in upper calf is treated by following;

1) Therapeutic ultrasound

2) Shortwave diathermy

3) Mild massage.

4) Acupuncture.

Following also are essential before you go back to your full routine;

a) Stretching exercises (passive and active)

b) Strengthening exercises

c) Isometric and isotonic exercises.

d) Exercises with weight.

e) Weight bearing exercises.

All the above measures should be able to take away the present upper calf pain.

1) Return to previous activity level should be a gradual process.

2) Exercises and physical therapy for improving muscle strength, flexibility, and endurance. Anterior compartment stretching exercises, Achilles tendon stretching, and overall lower extremity flexibility exercises are important.

AVOID running routine:

a) Too much

b) Too early

c) Too fast.

Please feel free for your follow up questions.

I would be happy to assist you further, if you need any more information.
