Customer Question

I have severe Scoliosis and just been told that I have hyper inflated lungs what does this mean. Will it get better with doing exercises. I was told to see my doctor who performed the surgery but cannot see him until next year and to see my GP my GP wasn't very helpful so will have to see another one.

Hi there,

This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Hyperinflated lungs mean trapped air in the lung tissues.

This can be due to the narrowing of the airways obstructing the air from coming out.

This is also called emphysema.

Scoliosis may predispose to this condition.

AAT deficiency, smoking are other causes.

Pulmonary function testing should be performed to assess the level of obstructive lung disease.

Best wishes,

It was my pleasure to help you today.
