Customer Question

My Mom' legs (calves) are weeping from her ascites. She has developed red areas that are very sore. Is this cellulitis? Tests are inconclusive re: the cause of the ascites, and her Dr. has no suggestions as to how to help her. I am placing absorbant pads on her calves to help control the weeping. What specialty area would address this? We need another opinion. Thanks so much.

Hi there,

three main reasons are conceivable: Heart failure , renal failure or massive varicosis. Her GP is supposed to do the blood works to exclude renal failure and heart failure. He should perform an ultrasound to see if there is ascites in her abdomen as well (which would be a bad sign of a liver problem or cancerous issue). If he doesn't find anything a phlebotomist can measure the veins and find out if they are not able to transport veous blood back to the heart.

She should keep her legs lifted up whenever she sits to help the water float out of her legs!

What reason do the doctors assume cause the edema? The best therapy depends on that.

Heart failure needs heart medication, vein issues need medical stockings, liver conditions need diuretics.
