Took otc cold pill and Robitussin dim but still have chest congestion that just won't loosen. Can you advise me of a good otc to take to break up the congestion. Robitussin just made me sick to my stomach. No fever, no runny nose just tight cough.
Do you have phlegm at back of throat?
Shortness of breath?
Pain in chest while coughing and deep breathing?
Any history of hypertension,Diabetes?
Duration of symptoms?
Which cold pill have you taken already?
Wheezing sound in chest?
Thanks dear.

Thanks for providing additional information.
I understand your concern and it's my pleasure to help you in every aspect.
As per your description, coughing up yellow phlegm and chest congestion suggest possible differential diagnosis like Bronchitis,GERD,Pneumonia,Pharyngitis.
So firstly Chest X-ray,sputum culture,Complete blood count should be done in your case.
As you have tried OTC Medicines with little relief so you may require antibiotics.
The main problem with this, is that if the underlying condition you have is not properly identified and treated , these OTC medications could alleviate your symptoms temporarily but they will not go away completely until what is causing them is treated.
So make an appointment with your doctor.
In the meantime you should do saline gargles and menthol steam inhalation.
Also drink warm liquids.
Avoid carbonated beverages,smoking,alcohol.
You should take OTC Mucinex D which contains guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine. It will help you to loosen the mucus and also has decongestant which will speed up the recovery.
Eat soup/broths/soft diet.
Hope this helps.
