My friend is in the hospital because of a medullary ( brain stem) stroke that has left him unable to stand or swallow. He's been in for close to 40 hours and they haven't given him any nutrition ( by IV ). He's really miserable about that!! How long should they wait before "feeding" him ??
HI. Are you saying he can't even swallow liquids?

Yes - he cannot even initiate swallowing - he chokes on his own salyvia.

OK--it wouldn't be inappropriate to wait at least two days and have him only on IV fluids to see if the swallowing problem improves sufficiently for him to take oral nourishment in the forms of liquids and purees but after that they will likely place a feeding tube through his nose into his stomach to initial enteral feedings that way;
