it is for someone else i am asking so will try to give info...cloudy, foul urine dec 2012 and confirmed by drugstore symptoms....then severe symptoms aug 2013...confirmed uti...antibiotics started and helped...should they have been given in dec? is this the same infection that just lingered and got worse? if not, why? thank you.

Thank you for the information,

Recurrent urinary infection is common.

In more than 25% of cases, uti recurs within a year of first infection.

Mild cases of uti may resolve spontaneously.

If it was a mild infection in Dec, then that probably resolved.

It is likely a recurrent or new one.

Treatment helps to reduce the duration of illness & prevent complications.

I hope this information helps.

I will be happy to assist, if you need any clarification.

Please feel free for any follow up query.

how long can one infection last? or does one lead to another and so on until treated?

It is likely to be a new infection not a continued infection.
In case it was continued then she would have symptoms.
The duration of treatment varies with the site of infection.
In lower urinary tract infection, the duration of treatment is usually between 3-7 days.
