Customer Question

I'm an otherwise healthy Male, 33, and have had a mildly annoying cough (with sneezing and occasional tightness in the throat) for maybe 6 to 7 weeks, and I'm wondering if I need to see a doctor about it, and if so, how to find one cheaply in my area (I'm uninsured as self-employed).
I only notice it a couple times a day or so. I've had allergies with similar effects, minus the coughing.
The general practitioner I normally see charges about $100 a visit. Any cheaper suggestions before I book an appt.?
Thanks much,

Were you able to see my replies in the chat session?

Hi Dr. B-
Sorry for late response; was out to dinner by the time you responded last night.
I'm not regularly coughing up mucus, but occasionally I'll try to hack some out on purpose just to clear it up back there.
Not really noticing being "short" of breath either. Nose feels partially clogged, but I can breathe in a normal amount by mouth still.
Thx, Jon

Do you have any allergies? Do you take any medication?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
I have had allergies, but usually not so pronounced as this year. Dust, cat dander mainly, which I don't think I've been unusually exposed to.
I'm not taking any prescription medications. Occasional over-the-counter decongestant and cough drops.

If I had a patient in your situation with your current symptoms using an allergy medication for about 4 weeks would likely be beneficial (like allegra or zyrtec) and possibly omeprazole as well because acid reflux (which may not show symptoms) is a very common cause of a chronic cough. If there is no improvement after 4-6 weeks then it would be advisable to have this examined by a doctor.

ok, I'll definitely try that first then. Any dosage recommendations?
Expert:  Dr. Brims replied 4 years ago.
They are all OTC, and each is taken once a day
