Hello,
I am a 66 year old male in generally good health. In September of 2012, I had a total right hip replacement. Subsequent to the hip replacement, I had blood clots in my lower right leg. I went on Coumadin therapy and began to wear graduated compression socks.
In March, the blood clots were resolved and the Coumadin therapy was discontinued. I walk aerobically or do the elliptical machine at the gym four days a week. There was minor valve damage to the vein in the lower right leg, and my right ankle has retained a slight swelling even with the blood clots resolved.
Is it necessary for me to continue to wear graduated compression socks as a prophylactic measure? They are especially uncomfortable in the summer. I am on 325mg aspirin therapy daily. Thank you.

Hi there,

I am here to help you with your concerns.

mysticdoc :

I understand your concern.

mysticdoc :

Your blood clot incident was related to the hip replacement, a provoked event.

mysticdoc :

You do not have any hereditary disorder causing increased risk of clots.

mysticdoc :

Hence, the risk of recurrent clot is low like any other average individual.

mysticdoc :

Regarding the slight swelling, this is common with vein problem.

mysticdoc :

Compression stockings help to prevent swelling, but they are not essential.

mysticdoc :

During summer time, you can discontinue wearing them due to the physical discomfort.

mysticdoc :

You may notice some worsening of the leg swelling but that is not concerning.

Best wishes,
