Hello,
My wife is having strange symptoms, I'm not sure what specialty could answer our question. The back of her head/neck have become painful and there are a couple bumps there, about the size of mosquito bites, but it feels like they're pretty far under the skin. the most painful spots are in the back of her head, about level with the ears... so far her neck is somewhat sore but not stiff, and no fever or any other symptoms. She's been feeling this way for about 12 hours now.
Is this worth a trip to the doctor? it could be a strange case of sore muscles, but since the most painful area is above the muscles, it just feels different.
thank you so much

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

mysticdoc :

Painful bumps behind the head can be from the infection.

mysticdoc :

Bacterial infection is a common one.

mysticdoc :

The sebaceous cysts at the back of the head can get inflamed.

mysticdoc :

Another possibility can be the early stages of shingles.

mysticdoc :

Shingles can cause bumps but usually they will be blister like with red base.

mysticdoc :

Do you notice any skin color change?

Customer:

Hello, thank you so much for this. There doesn't appear to be any skin color change.

mysticdoc :

ok

Customer:

do you think she should go to urgent care? she's also pregnant, by the way

Customer:

if that makes a different.

mysticdoc :

you can wait till tomorrow to see any further changes.

mysticdoc :

do the bumps feel firm and look red?

Customer:

they do feel firm but don't appear to be red

mysticdoc :

ok

mysticdoc :

this is likely infected sebaceous cysts.

mysticdoc :

Antibiotic ointment will be helpful ( mupirocin)

mysticdoc :

Mupirocin ointment does require prescription.

mysticdoc :

So urgent care will be ok.

Customer:

Ok, thanks so much for the information. We appreciate the help!
