How does psorasis effect the immune system and vice verus?
Thank you for your question.

The immune system has many roles one of which is to produce white blood cells to help fight infection. In those with psoriasis, the T cells (which are a type of a white blood cell) abnormally cause inflammation of the skin. This causes skin cells to grow faster than is normal and so they pile up in raised patches on the skin.

Those with psoriasis are at greater risk of developing certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure, elevated blood sugars, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease. Those with psoriasis are more prone to skin infections, this is due to the fact that they are more likely to prick at the patchy scales.

Why are people with psoriasis more likely to have thes disease? Also what is the increased risk percentage wise of the diseases you mention.
The exact reasons why psoriasis increases the risk of these diseases at this time are unknown. There are some theories, but nothing proven. All that is known at this time is that those with psoriasis have a risk factor for the diseases mentioned. The risk is 3-5 fold compared to those without it.
