her lungs and, at the same time, flail her arms and kick her feet

Resolved Question:

Every couple of months -- usually around 3:00 a.m. -- my 78-year-old wife will screem at the top of her lungs and, at the same time, flail her arms and kick her feet -- all while otherwise in a deep sleep. The next morning, she'll have no recollection of the occurrence.

I'm told that lay people call this "sleep terror" or "dream terror" -- while I understand the professional term may be "pavor nocturnus."

What remedy do you suggest?

Hi--sounds as though you've researched the subject. In general, no treatment is necessary, although benzodiazepines and benadryl elixir at night can be tried. If there is a history of anxiety then psychotherapy is often suggested.
