You are a phlebotomist for a community laboratory, and you

Resolved Question:

You are a phlebotomist for a community laboratory, and you report for work on an extremely busy day. You travel daily from the lab where you work to the hospital to draw blood, and then back to the lab. You have finished drawing blood at the hospital and are on your way back to the lab when you get a cell phone call that the hospital needs a complete blood count (CBC) and electrolytes drawn STAT for a patient that has just come into the ER. Would you turn around and go back to the ER or drop off your current samples and then go back to the ER? Explain your answer and what does the question have to do with preventing medical malpractice lawsuits?

drknowsbest :

drop off current samples as these may be destroyed if not packaged correctly or adequately to sit for extra time-if the samples are not temperature or time dependent then you may do either

drknowsbest :

the current samples being destroyed are more of a problem than orders for stat labs

drknowsbest :

if you have left the lab as ordered to deliver specimens then you cannot be held responsible for stat orders while you are gone-this is the er's responsibility/hospital responsibility to have someone in house for stat draws at all times
