Is your tongue swollen?
Are you having any difficulty swallowing or breathing?

yes the sides of my tongue are very painful and just the normal difficulty swallowing

As long as you are not experiencing any difficulty breathing or pronounced swelling of the tongue itself, this may simply be bruising of the tongue due to trauma sustained during the surgery (from retractors placed in the mouth to hold the tongue in place).

Ice application, sucking on ice and drinking cold fluids should help a bit.
It should slowly improve over the next few days.
If you find it is getting worse (increasing swelling, increasing difficulty swallowing or any difficulty breathing) go to the emergency room.
