Resolved Question:

I just got back my annual lab results. My lymphocytes were high at 43.7, with the comment that there were moderate variant lymphocytes noted in smear review. What does that mean?

The labs are never diagnostic and many times deceptive as there are many physiological aberrations, in an individual which can be perceived as abnormal. The lymphocyte count is best corroborated with the symptoms, other clinical manifestations, signs, physical examination findings and other investigations/medical imaging. If you do not have any symptoms; and all other investigations are normal, this is likely to be of no clinical significance and is not worrisome. Lymphocytes are usually raised in any chronic infection. If you have even a sinusitis of some duration; or any mild infection, these may raise.
