Customer Question

I had a cold last week (starting on Tues. 02/22/11) and stayed in and took Nyquil/Dayquil to help with cough and congestion. On Friday (02/25/11), I was feeling better but not cured and only took Dayquil in the morning. Later that night, around 9:30 pm, I had gone out and drank heavily at a comedy show and laughed so hard that the next day (Sat. 02/26/11) my throat was sore.
That Saturday I stayed in. On Sunday, I was feeling much better but had a sore throat still and in the evening I coughed and spit out clear phlegm and noticed streaks of blood in it (more phlegm than blood). I had been coughing and spitting while sick and this was the first time I noticed blood.
I tried to cough up phlegm again and only got a few specs of blood the second time. The third time was just clear phlegm with no blood. I would be coughing through out the day and spitting out the phlegm but there would be no blood. Than at the end of the day on Sunday it happened again. It was a little less blood than before and than back to no blood. Monday was the same thing.
I've pretty much recovered from my cold and my sore throat is gone but I still have the occasional mild cough with little phlegm and occasionally specs or a streak of blood in it. I don't have any bloody stools or feel any pain in my stomach. Do I have bleeding in my stomach; is this something to worry about?

Did you consult doctor for cough?

Do you take any other medicine?

Did you have any test?

Do you have any other symptom or previous illness?

Thank you.

Thank you for the information,

There are many causes of coughing up blood mixed mucus / blood in the phlegm.

The most common cause coughing up blood mixed mucus is infection of the respiratory tract.

Several common bacterial or viral infection can cause blood in the phlegm or sputum.

As you have a history of sore throat, upper respiratory tract infection is the most possible cause rather than gastrointestinal tract bleeding.

Though there can be other many causes of blood in the sputum like tuberculosis, bronchitis, tumor, trauma, blood disorder, heart cause, kidney disease, immunological disorder etc.

Those may not be the cause in your case.

In some cases no cause is found.

As nyquil, dayquil did not help, you may need antibiotic to clear up the infection.

An examination by doctor is necessary to find out the exact cause and star treatment according to the cause.

I hope this information helps.

Happy to assist, if you need any clarification.

Please feel free for any follow up query.

Best wishes.
