There is no single approach that is going to work for every patient.
This study recently published looked at the results with various diet approaches, and the evidence would suggest that the most important factor is compliance with the diet, rather than the specific type of diet used.

Are there factors that do affect resuts that are totally seperate from type of diet or exercise done, like a plan to workout with a buddy or hanging out with thin people? This affects outcomes, I need stats on how much.

There is no single simple answer: What motivates one person (for example; looking better in a bathing suit) may not motivate someone else (who may be more worried or motivated by improving their health).
