My wife keeps getting mouth ulcers She doesnt get one or two

Resolved Question:

my wife keeps getting mouth ulcers
She doesnt get one or two but always has more than 5 in her mouth. This has been very painful for her when eating and even talking
She has suffered from this for almost 5 years and maybe even before this.
She has been to the doctors who have taken blood tests etc but nothing has come up.
She has used most highstreet products such as gels and mouthwash but they dont really work or prevent the ulcers from reappearing.
We know she is anemic and lacks iron. However when she has iron supplements, they seem to trigger the ulcers.
She cannot eat certain thing that also trigger ulcers
She is not on any regular medication and is in generally good health
Can you please help

Hi there,

Sorry to hear that.

Recurrent mouth ulcers are sometimes associated with certain connective tisue disorders like lupus, Sjogren's, Behcet's disease, or bullous pemphigoid.

Behcet's disease neds to be given special consideration due to her recurrent episodes of oral ulcers.

These conditions are diagnosed by a rheumatologist.

Otherwise, this is likely related to aphthous ulcers.

Potent steroid mouth rinses like triamcinolone acetonide in Orabase, fluocinonide gel covered by Orabase, amlexanox 5 percent oral paste are helpful in providing relief.

Hi thank you for your response.

Are those available without prescription?

and how serious are those disorders. Is there anything that she can eat that can help?

Many thanks

These medications require prescription.

These disorders are due to her hyperactive immune system, which is causing iflammation of the mucous membrane ( auto immune disorder) like in the mouth.

She can eat antioxidants more like fruits, vegetables etc.

Avoid hot & spicy food, coffee, alcohol.
