Resolved Question:

3 months ago I slammed my finger in a car door; there was bleeding under the nail. 3 weeks ago the older nail started to lift from the cuticle end and it appears that a new nail is growing. The old nail did stay on for 2 more weeks and feel off today. The new nail is only about 1/4 grown over where the original nail was (the nail bed). Without the old nail there to protect the nail bed will the new nail continue to grow in properly? Should I keep it protected (bandaid or splint??)?? What is the best course of action to ensure the new nail grows in and adheres to the nail bed? Is it correct that it could take up to one year for the nail to grow in?

I am sorry for your accident to your fingernail.

The new nail should continue to grow out just fine unless the nail bed was affected.

You can keep it covered with a bandaid but a splint is probably not necessary.

If it is oozing a little from the old nail coming off then you can soak it in Epson Salt. Should it turn red yo will need to see a provider for antibiotics.

The new nail can take up to a year but many grow back sooner.
