what causes someone's lips to swell up for no reason?

Is there any pain associated with the swelling?
Is it both lips equally?
Any tongue or throat swelling?
Sores on the lips?

he says that it is his top lip only, he isn't on any medication and he doesnt have any pain with it.
Thanks for the additional information,

The swelling could be due to a number of different things.

1. Allergic reaction (toothpaste, new foods, chapsticks, etc)
2. Cold sore (usually will feel some tingling or discomfort)
3. Injury to the lip (unlikely since no pain)
4. Angioedema-this is a condition where a person has low levels of a certain protein in the blood that can lead to swelling. A blood test can diagnose this. Would expect both lips to swell, typically but it can cause only one lip to swell.
5. dental problems

I would recommend that he try benadryl if he is having swelling right now.

He should follow up with his doctor if he has recurrent swelling to accurately diagnose the underlying cause.

I hope this gives you an idea of possible causes.
