month because her bone marrow is not producing blood

Resolved Question:

My 87 year mother-in-law is having blood transfusions every month because her bone marrow is not producing blood. Is there anything else she can do?

If the bone marrow is not functioning, then unfortunately there aren't many options other than regular transfusions. Medications like Epogen can be considered which can stimulate the bone marrow to produce more cells. But this would require a bone marrow that is functioning to a certain capacity. Another option is bone marrow transplant, which is a procedure with considerable risks, and is mostly employed in life threatening disorders like leukemia. So you discuss your concerns with her hematologist. I am sorry I don't have a very optimistic answer for you.
