My blood cell count came back at 11.4, but everything else

Resolved Question:

My white blood cell count came back at 11.4, but everything else was normal. My PA said my results were normal, but what would cause the WBC to be consider high on the lab results?

Hello and thanks for using

A 'normal' white blood count is considered to be 4.3-10.8 (depending on the lab) --the numbers could vary slightly...your's being 11.4 is not really what we consider abnormal...more like 'high normal'. An elevated white count could represent an infection as white blood cells job is to fight infection. Other things that can elevate the white blood count is exercise, viral or bacterial infections, stress, smoking, certain autoimmune diseases, tissue damage from burns, even Leukemia (however, with Leukemia, the white blood count would be much, much higher than this).

So, your PA was correct. We do not generally consider 11.4 to be of concern unless you are having symptoms such as a sore throat, etc...then we will consider treatment.

Hope this helps!
