Allopurinol is the drug used daily to keep gout under control. Its only problem is that the first few weeks of starting it may trigger an exacerbation of gout so you need additional anti-inflammatory medication too.

WHAT IS A GOOD INFLAMATORY MEDICINE? DOES ASBORATION MEAN THAT IT WILL GET WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTER?
Expert:  Pauline replied 8 years ago.
Indomethacin or diclofenac has been used for pain relief, and yes the pain can get worse before it gets better. colchicine can be used by some doctors instead.
