Moldy ear smell cure

Resolved Question:

My granddaughter has a moldy smell in ear that you can smell when you are within feet of her. She has been seen by an ENT and has started using vinegar nightly to help but we do not know the cause. Any ideas? It seems fairly common when I look on the internet but no cause.

Since how long? What is her age? Any test done?

Customer: replied 8 years ago.
Off and on for about 6 months. Her sister has had the same. The girls are 12 and 9. She is very healthy, occasional cold but never misses a day of school.

Thank you for the input,

Fungal infection of the ear usually occurs in the external part of the ear called otitis externa. There can be some predisposing factors for it. These include presence of water in the ear canal as from swimming or from irrigation, allergies, skin diseases like eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, injury to the canal from cleaning with swabs or other objects. Wax may also trap water & makes the skin soft & vulnerable to infection. These factors need to be searched for & taken care of.

Hope this information will help you.
Wish her early recovery.
Any query, please ask.

The ENT said she did not see any of these things on exam. She has been using the anti-fungal drops for 2 weeks. She will start the vinegar solution tonight. Sinuses were dry and nothing in the canal.

Do they swim or is there any chance of water getting into it?
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
They have not been swimming recently since it is winter but there is obviously a chance that water could get in their ears when they bathe. Do you think that would create fungus?
Expert:  Dr. Su S replied 8 years ago.
When no other cause was found on examination by doctor , this can be probable. Water if remains trapped in the ear can cause maceration of skin & favors the growth of fungus or bacteria as you are aware of .
