Are you diabetic? Apart from the pain what are your other symptoms?

I am currently on my second day of taking Ciprofloxacin, i have had a constant left sided pain in my lower abdomen and it really hurts until i have a bowel movement and then the pain subsides to a dull ache. My stool is also narrow, when should i be concerned about this illness and treat it as an emergency?
Expert:  Dr. Arun Phophalia replied 8 years ago.

The pain severity gradually goes down after 48 hours and most of the times it takes about 3-5 days for pain to go down completely. The pain depends on the severity of the infection and number of diverticulum involved.The alarming signs are;

1) Pain not remitting in 3 days or increasing or becoming severe, anytime. Any pain which is continuous and above the level of 7 or more constantly (on the scale of 0-10), warrants intravenous antibiotics.

2) Bloating, distension, severe constipation are signs of the emergency.

what if i lose my appetite, i do have bloating, my own doctor said my flattened stools are the cause of a bowel obstruction could that be from an abcess?

Expert:  Dr. Arun Phophalia replied 8 years ago.

Any infection in the body causes loss of appetite. Abscess formation have following signs;

1) High grade fever,

2) Severe constipation; even difficult to pass gas

3) Excessive tenderness on abdomen

4) Bloating or distension

Distension does show that infection is not properly controlled and only liquid diet should be taken.
