Hi, jameson - There are glands in the skin that produce something called sebum, especially on the back. If a gland gets blocked, it starts filling up with sebum and produces a hard lump. Then it can get infected and painful. If the lump is just hard and not red or painful, then see your doctor sometime in the next couple of month and he or she can open it and drain it. If it is getting red and tender, you need to soak it in hot water 4 times a day for 10 minutes each time. Either sit in a tub of hot water or stand in the shower or take a washcloth and soak it in hot water and put it on the lump. If it gets worse, you will need to go to an urgent care clinic and get it drained. You might need antibiotics.
Good luck.
