it possible to get a positive drug screen for methamphetamines

Customer Question

Is it possible to get a positive drug screen for methamphetamines from taking over the counter cold medications?

Greetings.

Yes, it is possible that the cold medicines can give a false positive test for methamphetamines. Enzyme Multiple Immunoassay Test (EMIT), can produce what is often referred to as a false positive (a case in which the test shows the presence of a drug, which is a legal chemical).

I took a pre-employment drug test on 3/24/08. The whole week prior to the test I was taking over the counter cold meds. I talked to the MRO on 3/31/08 and she asked if I was on any prescriptions (which I'm not) and she said she had to consider it a positive test for methamphetamines. What actions can I take to get this cleared up?

Hello,

You should appeal for a retest or Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) test, which is a better test. Tell them that you were on OTC cold medicines. This should be reversed. See this helpful link;
