Normal blood pressure is under 120/80. Stage 1 hypertension is 140-159 over 90-99. You would need to see your GP for some additional readings. Usually people are given a few months (3-6) to get their blood pressure under control with lifestyle changes like proper diet, limited salt, regular exercise, and smoking cessation. If the blood pressure isn't within normal range after lifestyle changes, then hypertension medication should be begun. If there is some other risk factor like diabetes, kidney problems, obesity, etc. then medication can be begun immediately.
