Jaundice is usually a sign that the liver is having difficulty, which could be caused by many different things: viral infections, bacterial infections, parasite infections, medications, tumors or cysts. Sometimes because of a problem with the liver, the pancreas may become inflamed.

Pancreas problems have similar potential causes to those that I've listed as causing liver problems (viral/bacterial infections, medications, tumors, or cysts).

Generally, a CT scan would be able to show if there are any blockages or growths in either organ that could be causing his problems. Blood tests would be able to determine possible infectious causes.

If he is on any medications or is using drugs or alcohol these could be another source to investigate.
