What makes me cough when I eat or drink something that is very cold? I can take a few bites of ice cream and I always start to cough, same thing with very cold icy drinks.

Hi Maggie Ann,

This is called:

Bronchospasm

About 5-10% of people get bronchspasm coughing when consuming very cold liquids/foods.

See detail link:

Unfortunately, the only known cure is 'Avoidance' [i.e. trying not to eat/drink very cold foods]. Take heart though--it is not a serious or life-threatening condition.

Take care.

Reply to Dr. Steve's Post: I have chronic bronchitis do you think that could be a contributing factor?

YES--people w/ chronic bronchitis ARE more prone to bronchospasm.
