Customer Question

I have small spots of skin that are round and flaky. They are found from my shoulders down to my knees. Some of them are pink in color, others are a little darker but not yet red, while others are just skin colored and looks like a round section of pealing skin. They don't itch or puss or bleed. The size is a range from a little smaller than 1 cm to a quarter inch. I just discovered these and since it is a friday night I can't call for a dermatology appointment until Monday. I am concerned. I have had a problem with shaving irritation in the past but know I wonder if the two are linked someway. My legs have always itched like crazy but my torso and those spots on it do not itch. When I itch my legs I get raised bumps.

Dear Ms Hughes,

With out being able to see these areas, I can only surmise that they may be a ringworm infection-a fungal infection known as tinea corporis. You can pick up some anti-fungal cream or lotion like lotrimin, and apply 2x day for 2 weeks. Selsun Blue can also be used for the shower. If this does not clear you, then see your provider for an exam. Make sure you use sunblock wheneveryou go out to prevent skin cancer.

Here is more info for you:

Thanks for writing Ja and I hope this helps, Take care, Paula

The spots are quite random and none are connected. The nearest a spot is to another is about 5 inches, and those are the smaller ones. The newer spots look a little scaly and have not flaked yet, they are fleshed colored or slightly pink. They look like little spots before skin peels. The texture is scaly and the skin is looser with little lines it in. The older ones are round in shape and have skin on the outside but the middle has seemed to peel away. It looks like an ulcer, to give you an idea of the shape, but not raised and no liquid is coming from it. These spots are red. The spots are not raised, they just feel like very small patches of flaky or scaly skin. None of the spots itch and they are all in places that are always covered by clothing. The spots on my leg stop above mid thigh, they are on my torso and a few near my armpits. My forearms and mid thigh down do not have these spots, I also do not have any on my neck or face. I hope that clarified a little better. I tried to take a picture of one but it only looks like a pink dot in the camera or a little surface ulcer.

check out the picture of a ringworm rash on this link. There are several other rashes shown on this slide show, if the ringworm picture doesn't seem to fit. If it is ringworm, it can be contagious.
