Hi Kim,

Here are the INDICATIONS to see an MD when you have a 'cold w/ sore throat':

  • Symptoms persist greater than 7 days
  • High fevers [>101.5] that last greater than 1 day
  • Severe difficulty swallowing
  • Hugely enlarged tonsils, or visible pus on them

Otherwise [in the absence of above], it is just a viral infection and should self-resolve within 7-8 days.
