We are getting intermittent errors where our integrated

Customer Question
We are getting intermittent...

We are getting intermittent errors where our integrated trailer-braking stops working ('07 2500 HD). Turning off the ignition and restarting usually fixes it but, it's still a potentially dangerous issue.

Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the car? Do you have scan tool or a code reader?

60k miles but, it doesn't give any codes (yes, I have a code-reader) other than the DIC stating that the trailer braking system needs service.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your 2500 yourself? What have you tried so far?

We had the dealer replace the brake-pressure sensor and we checked wiring harness connections all the way to the bumper 7-pin.

Perhaps this is a tough nut to crack so it requires a bit more time. That's okay if it's the case so I can wait another day or so. Thanks for your follow up.

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer! I apologize for the extended wait time you experienced, I've only just come online now and would like to assist you with your question.

It will require some testing to determine exactly what is wrong. If you're seeing a message that the trailer brake requires service it is because a failure has been seen and fault codes are setting. The first step in diagnosing the problem is to determine what codes are setting and then testing can be done from there accordingly.

It looks as though you may have tried using a generic OBDII code reader, which will only be able to communicate with the engine controller. Do you have the brand and model of what you tied?

Hi and thanks for getting back to me. The code reader I used is the Innova 3100 CanOBD2 Diagnostic tool. I should also mention that I have seen the same message on the DIC even without the RV hooked up to the truck and it seems to be totally random.
GMC Mechanic: sprinkles08, ASE Certified Technician replied 17 days ago

That's a code reader and is only capable of communicating with the engine controller, ABS and possibly the airbag module. An actual scan tool is going to be necessary to communicate with the trailer brake module.
