Original oil pump and yes the engine light has come on in the past

Its a 03 duramax 2500

Okay thank you for that information, the most common cause for the gauge to not read on the 6.6 is usually a failed oil pressure sending unit.In order to verify this you should remove the old unit and install a manueal guage and read the actual oil pressure. You need a Minimum 28PSI – Hot – 1800 RPM. If the oil pressure checks okay then you can test the guage with the steps in the link below.

The oil pressure sensor is on the driver's side of the block. See the removal steps for it in the link below as well. Have a look and post back if you have more questions and or need more help.
