I'm replacing the starter on my 1990 GMC SIERRA 1500 SLE AN need to know witch post the smaller cable attaches too the one labeled L or R

Either one should work fine, it is setup like that incase wire will only reach one side. Stands for right and left. Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks.

it still won't turn over could it be an ignition problem

You probably blew a fuse. With meter or test light the large wire should have voltage at all times and small wire should have voltage with key in start position. Let me know which one is missing, thanks.
