Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel Replacement
  1. If equipped with air conditioning (A/C), set the air flow control to the instrument panel (IP) vent position.
  2. Apply the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from moving.
  3. If the transmission is automatic, move the shift lever all the way down.
  4. Tilt the steering wheel to the full down position.
  5. Remove the IP cluster trim plate bezel. Object Number: 348724  Size: SH

  6. Remove the end panels. The left panel is shown, and the right panel is similar.
  7. Remove the right side air outlets.

  8. Remove the assist handle by depressing the release tabs accessed through the air outlet duct holes.
  9. Remove the windshield pillar garnish moldings. Remove the bolts retaining the panel to IP assembly.

  10. Lift the trim panel up to disconnect the electrical connector (1) to the ambient light sensor on the underside of the trim panel.

  11. Remove the trim panel from the IP assembly.
  12. Headlining Trim Panel Replacement

    Caution: Do not attempt to repair or alter the head impact energy-absorbing material glued to the headliner or to the garnish trims. If the material is damaged, replace the headliner and/or the garnish trim. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.

    Notice: Use care when working around the head curtain inflator module. Sharp tools may puncture the curtain airbag. If the head curtain inflator module is damaged in any way, it must be replaced.

    Notice: If a vehicle is equipped with a head curtain inflator module ensure that the inflator module and tether are undamaged. If tether or curtain airbag are damaged in any way, they must be replaced.

    1. Remove the instrument panel (I/P) top trim panel. Remove the hinge pillar trim. Object Number: 698526  Size: SH

    2. Disconnect the headliner wire connectors from the junction block located next to the brake pedal.
    3. Remove the wire harness retainers along the windshield pillar and I/P assembly.
    4. Remove the center trim pillar moldings. Remove the third pillar trim pillar moldings. Remove the rear corner trim pillar moldings. Disconnect the electrical connector to the rear view mirror.
    5. Remove the upper console.
    6. Remove the DVD player, if equipped. Remove the front sunshades. .
    7. Remove the sunshade holders.
    8. Remove the rear coat hook, if equipped.
    9. Remove the assist handles. Remove auxiliary climate control console assembly. Remove the roof mounted air outlet louver by turning counter clockwise in order to remove the retainer.
    10. Remove the retainer.
    11. Remove the sunroof finishing lace, if equipped. Remove the rear headliner retainers, if needed.
    12. Carefully separate the air duct at the right C-pillar from the headliner.
    13. Carefully separate the headliner from the roof hook and loop retainers.

    14. With the aid of an assistant carefully slide the headliner out through the rear of the vehicle.
    15. Remove the interior dome lamp assembly in order to transfer to the new headliner.

    1. With the aid of an assistant carefully slide the headliner in through the rear of the vehicle.
    2. Secure the headliner to the roof hook and loop retainers while aligning the air duct at the right of the third pillar.
    3. Install the retainer through the air outlet louver
    4. Install the air outlet louver by turning clockwise till it is seated in place.
    5. Install the auxiliary climate control assembly. Install the assist handles. Install the interior dome lamp.
    6. Install the rear coat hook, if equipped. .
    7. Install the sunshade holders to the headliner.
    8. Install the front sunshades. .
    9. Install the DVD player, if equipped. Connect the electrical connector to the rear view mirror, if needed.
    10. Install the upper console. Install the rear corner trim pillar moldings. Install the third pillar trim moldings.
    11. Install the center trim pillar moldings. Object Number: 698526  Size: SH

      Important: Ensure that all of the wire harness retainers in the IP and the windshield pillar are all pressed into place in order to prevent rattling during driving.

    12. Connect the headliner electrical connectors to the junction block located next to the brake pedal.
    13. Install the sunroof finishing lace, if equipped. Install the hinge pillar trim. Install the I/P top trim panel.

john how do you remove the assist handle. I know it has two steel rods that has a plastic black sleeve around them?
