2008 Saturn: kms..low speed steering clunk..stop sign..steering wheel…

Customer Question
I have a 2008 Saturn...
I have a 2008 Saturn Aura with 30,00 Kms on it, 2 years old. It was a perfect vehicle until a month ago when a low speed steering clunk developed.

On slow right turns, such as turning right from a stop sign, I sense a couple of light clunks through the steering wheel. Not really a noise as much as a sensation that is telegraphed through the steering wheel. Generally, I sense one or two clunks while turning the wheel and one or two as it returns.

This doesn't happen on left turns. Also, I have never noticed it at higher speeds. It doesn't happen when the car is sitting still and you turn the wheel to the right. It seems to only happen when turning right and accelerating. In fact, I was pulling into the garage tonight turning right without pressing the accelerator, and I didn't notice the clunk.

It's nothing serious now, but it seems like the kind of thing that could get worse.

these cars have been a issue with the intermediate steering shaft getting play in them causing the clunk

Understand that the issue is probably due to the intermediate steering shaft (ISS) sticking as this is the same information one can find on the forums.

What i am looking for from "just answer" is what is the permanent fix ie. what should I insist that my GM dealer do to fix the problem. Lube the ISS only or replace the ISS with the new design version. My ISS is silver colored. The new design as I understand from the forums is black painted.

thank you

i would have them replace it with the new design but understand this is a fix but it hasn't been on the road long enough to know how long it will last this problem has been a sore spot on most gm models for many years i hope the latest new design will fix it for good
