will it just grind when trying to put it in reverse or first gear?will it physically shift into any gear with clutch pedal pushed down?

when you push shifter all the way to the right- it seems like it goes as far as it used to but when you push it forward toward overdrive an let the clutch out it winds up being in 3rd gear! and as far as reverse - you can push the shifter far enough to the right but cant pull it back into reverse! its like at a grinding at all and truck still drives and shifts well in all other gears.also it use to be hard to get it in reverse when it was cold, then after it warmed up it was fine

ok..well if you checked the shifter pin and it was ok then something has failed in the shifter rail assembly or something has broke and is blocking the shift forks ect..that unit has to come out and the whole top assembly removed to see if its the shifter rod assembly has broken or something have eliminated the things you can do without pulling the trans out.but at this point it needs to come out and be torn down

thank you! i was afraid youd say that!forgot to mention that the grease was also full but old.something broken i can understand but that doesent explain why it use to be hard to go to reverse while it was cold unless the grease had broken down! maybe i can find out more when i tear it out! love that old truck-its worth looking into! thanks again
