What size engine do you have in your GMC?

actually a 2000 gmc sierra 1500, 5.3 liter v8

Below are the instructions, the Italized portion will only apply if you have 4wd, let me know if you have any questions on this

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable
  • Raise and support the vehicle.
  • Remove the protective shields as necessary.
  • Remove the starter solenoid shield.
  • Remove the starter to transmission close out cover bolt.
  • Disconnect the engine oil level sensor connection.
  • Remove the front axle mounting bracket through bolt nut, if equipped with four wheel drive (4WD).
  • Reposition the front axle mounting bracket through bolt until the bolt tip is flush with the support bushing. Do not remove the bolt, if equipped with 4WD.

  • Remove the mounting bolts from the engine block.
  • Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.
  • Remove the starter transmission close out cover.

  • Disconnect the positive battery cable and wiring harness from the starter.

    I am having trouble locating the starter, do you have any pictures or advice

    The starter is located on the passenger side bottom rear of engine, #6 in the diagram below, It is not too difficult of a job it is accessed from the bottom of the truck, make sure you disconnect the battery negative cable before attempting to replace, It might be easier to remove the 2 bolts that hold it to the engine first then allow it to hang but support it, then remove the wire connections.
